I argue that most successful social movements produce engaged moral inquiry that deepens our understanding of the demands of justice by virtue of nuanced understanding of the experience of injustice.

ACLS Highlights New Publications by Board of Directors
ACLS is pleased to share the latest publications by the ACLS Board of Directors, spanning a diverse range of timely topics.
- ACLS Board Chair William C. Kirby’s new book, Empires of Ideas: Creating the Modern University from Germany to America to China is featured in the Asian Review of Books. The book details the history of the research university and its future, and the trajectory of which countries dominate global university rankings.
‘Can Chinese universities set global standards in the twenty-first century?’…It is hard to think of anyone better qualified than William Kirby to delve into this question. Peter Gordon’s review of “Empires of Ideas: Creating the Modern University from Germany to America to China”
- In Making Space for Justice: Social Movements, Collective Imagination, and Political Hope, Treasurer of the ACLS Board Michele Moody-Adams shows how social movements bridge the gap between political thought and political activism. She discussed the book in a July Q&A with Columbia News. Moody-Adams also recently wrote an article on “Coming to Terms With History” for The Raven.
- Theodore S. Gonzalves wrote a chapter for the exhibit catalog of Carlos Villa: Worlds in Collision, the first museum retrospective of iconic Filipino-American artist Carlos Villa, organized by the Asian Art Museum and the San Francisco Art Institute. The accompanying exhibits have been featured in Hyperallergic, W Magazine, and the New York Times.
- Melani McAlister co-edited two new 2022 releases, The Cambridge History of America and the World: Volume 4, 1945 to the Present and Global Faith, Worldly Power: Evangelical Internationalism and U.S. Empire. Her book The Kingdom of God Has No Borders: A Global History of American Evangelicals will also be released in paperback in Summer 2022 with a new preface.
- The paperback of Vice Chair of the Board Jimena Canales’ Bedeviled: A Shadow History of Demons in Science will be released in August 2022. It was reviewed in a number of publications, including Science Magazine.
- Secretary of the Board Ann Fabian published “The Travails of a ‘Lady Scientist’” in the Fall 2021 issue of Raritan: A Quarterly Review.
- In December 2021, Richard J. Powell was profiled in The Washington Informer, focusing on his latest book, the third edition of Black Art: A Cultural History. He was also featured in the 2021 HBO documentary Black Art: In the Absence of Light.
- Peter Baldwin’s Command and Persuade: Crime, Law, and the State across History was voted one of the best law books of 2021 by the UK Times. In 2023, MIT Press will release his newest book, Athena Unbound: Why and How Scholarly Knowledge Should Be Free for All.
