In April 2020, the American Council of Learned Societies introduced its Strategic Priorities for 2020-2024.

The priorities set were the result of several months of consultation and deliberation with Member Societies, Consortium and Associate Colleges and Universities, board, funders, fellows, partners, and staff, and remain solidified in our commitment to advance the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

The goals are centered around four core elements: providing support for scholarship and scholars, especially new PhDs and those facing a difficult job market in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic; our organization’s mission to connect different facets of the academy and serve as an alliance builder in strengthening its infrastructure and exploring what its future will be; the need to amplify humanistic scholarship in the public eye; as well as the need to review what we as a community are doing now and renew in order to strengthen and sustain a positive future for humanistic scholarship.

ACLS supports the creation and circulation of knowledge that advances understanding of humanity and human endeavors in the past, present, and future, with a view to improving human experience.

2020-2024 Goals

  1. Encourage scholars and scholarship responsive to diverse audiences
  2. Strengthen relationships
  3. Lift the public profile of humanistic knowledge
  4. Empower ourselves to work responsibly and inclusively
