ACLS congratulates Princeton University historian and two-time ACLS fellowship awardee Marina A. Rustow F’09, F’14 on being named one of this year’s MacArthur Fellows. Rustow, who received a Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowship in 2009 and an ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowship in 2014, directs the Princeton Geniza Project, where she is developing new methodologies for mining and contextualizing the tangible evidence left by medieval Middle Eastern scribes. As the MacArthur Foundation’s website notes,”Deploying her considerable prowess in languages, social history, and papyrology, Rustow is rewriting our understanding of medieval Jewish life and transforming the historical study of the Fatimid empire.”

Rustow joins a group of 37 distinguished scholars who are recipients of both ACLS and MacArthur awards. As the following list of these awardees shows, ACLS funding often represents an early investment in the careers of scholars whose path-breaking work will go on to win other prestigious awards. In addition to the ACLS fellowship and grant recipients, a number of other members of the ACLS community, including former ACLS Board of Directors chair Susan McClary and former board member Thomas Cleveland Holt, have received the MacArthur Fellowship.
