Christopher Nolan has cited 2005 ACLS Fellow Emily Wilson‘s translation of The Odyssey as one of his inspirations for his 2026 film adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. Wilson, Professor of Classical Studies and College for Women Class of 1963 Term Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, has been interviewed and featured in the media ahead of the film’s release, including in Esquire, Vulture, the New York Times, The Telegraph, and more.

What was your response when you heard the movie was happening?

“It’s wonderful because it means there are going to be both more general readers and potentially more students who will be excited about Ancient Greek literature. I hope some of them will sign up for Ancient Greek, where the enrollments are always borderline in trouble.”
