The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to announce that it will add 10 fellowships to the ACLS Fellowship Program for the 2026-27 competition year. The additional awards, made possible by an anonymous donor, will support scholars confronting official constraints on their research and writing owing to the contested nature of their fields.

The oldest and most academically diverse program in the ACLS portfolio, the ACLS Fellowships welcome proposals from scholars pursuing research on topics grounded in any time period, world region, or humanistic methodology, at all postdoctoral career stages, working on or off the tenure track, who have earned a PhD in the humanities or interpretive social sciences.

“In light of the ongoing attempts to mute research and writing in humanistic fields, it is imperative that we support scholars facing barriers to their work built by forces beyond their campuses,” said ACLS President Joy Connolly. “The ACLS Fellowships are renowned for embracing the broadest view of humanistic research and these additional awards align with our long-held values.”

The application deadline for the ACLS Fellowship Program is September 17, 2026, 5:00 PM ET for the 2026-27 competition.
