Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the Middle Way philosophy of the 12th century Tibetan thinker Chapa Chökyi Sengé’ in the intellectual context of Indo-Tibetan philosophical history. Chapa’s Middle Way philosophical literature is crucial for Indo-Tibetan intellectual history, since it stands as a building block of fundamental importance for almost every Tibetan Buddhist tradition that would flourish in the centuries to follow. This dissertation takes a more detailed look at Chapa’s intellectual context and his Middle Way based on newly discovered Tibetan sources. Moreover, this dissertation will advance our understanding of Indian philosophy since Chapa was a skillful reader of Indian philosophy.
