Abstract

This project researches, translates, and annotates the novel Tout-monde [The All-World] (1993) by the French-Martinican writer and two-time Nobel Prize in Literature finalist Édouard Glissant (1928-2011). Conceived along the lines of the famous French publisher Gallimard’s La Pléiade series, the text is presented with expert explanatory notes and details about the text’s genetic history. Tout-monde was written at the height of Glissant’s powers in the most important decade of his publishing life, 1987-1997. This novel remains the most important work not translated from Glissant’s career, and this annotated translation will draw new attention to Glissant’s novels. This novel makes clear the full scope of his literary and philosophical contributions.
