The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to welcome the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) to its federation of 81 scholarly societies.

Delegates representing ACLS member societies voted to admit AAAS to the American Council of Learned Societies during the Meeting of the Council at the 2024 ACLS Annual Meeting in Cambridge, MA, Friday, April 25, 2025.

Founded in 1979, AAAS is a research and teaching hub for Asian American Studies, an interdisciplinary field born out of social movements in the 1960s. The association advances the highest professional standards of research, teaching, and service in the field of Asian American Studies, and sponsors conferences, symposia, special projects, and publications.

“ACLS is excited to welcome the Association for Asian American Studies as our latest member society,” said ACLS President Joy Connolly. “AAAS acts as a vital hub for knowledge that deepens understanding of the multivarious experiences and histories of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We look forward to working with AAAS and their members to support and promote interdisciplinary scholars and research across the humanities and social sciences.”

As a national federation of 81 academic societies, ACLS represents more than 275,000 scholars, faculty, and students of humanistic fields of study in the United States. Each ACLS member society is an independent, not-for-profit organization focused on promoting the research, publications, education, and impact of the distinct fields of study they represent, as well as supporting their members.
