Abstract
"Bad Comrades" examines a significant shift in contemporary art’s relationship to power and politics. A critical study of visual art and culture from across the Balkan Peninsula, the book positions the work of the region’s leading artists, filmmakers, and curators as central nodes that illuminate a vibrant cultural constellation. Transnational and intermedia in scope, "Bad Comrades" tells the story of how artists, filmmakers, and curators from the region are revising socialist-era histories and contending with unanswered questions of political responsibility in search of new and renewed alternatives to the disaster capitalism and authoritarianism surging across Southeastern Europe, and much of the world, today.
