Abstract

This research project uses Graphical Information System (GIS) mapping to share historical and environmental data on land in Barbuda, which is an Eastern Caribbean island with a unique practice of land cultivation and use. Barbuda has a distinct dialect and strong connection to its people, similar to other insular groups like the Gullah Geechee. This research explores identity through land use and cultivation. Using Participatory Action Research, oral histories from local land stewards in Barbudan dialect, and multimedia visuals, this project will be embedded on a GIS platform with narrative nonfiction to show spatial and ecological data on land use.
