Position Description

Founded in 1923, the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent international nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences through a wide variety of workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research, and publications. With support from the Knight Foundation, the Media & Democracy project focuses on the relationship between a changing media on the one hand, and democratic practices and institutions on the other. The project explores the trajectories of technological, social, and economic change in the media and how these changes contribute to, and potentially can rectify, current democratic anxieties. Through a range of projects, the Program Officer helps foster engagement and cooperation among humanities scholars, social scientists, journalists, and others working on the relationship between media and democracy. The Program Officer bridges the work between practitioners and scholars, facilitates new and innovative scholarship in this critical area of study, and works to elevate the quality of both academic and public discussion surrounding it.
