Abstract

This research project aims to examine the intersection of nationalism and academic freedom in Albania, with a focus on how nationalist ideology influences scholarly work, teaching, and the autonomy of academic institutions. It seeks to address the following research question: How do nationalist discourses shape and constrain academic freedom in Albania, particularly in—but not limited to—the fields of history, language studies, and social sciences? Given Albania’s context and the rise of nationalist rhetoric, this question is of critical importance for understanding the role that academic institutions play in reproducing—and not challenging—dominant national narratives and by doing so self-limiting their own academic freedom.
