Abstract
“An Architect of Black Feminist Theatre” is the first critical study of award-winning Black feminist theatre artist and pedagogue Glenda Dickerson (1945-2012). This book, divided into two sections, evaluates Dickerson's artistic career, critical scholarship, and Black feminist interventions while critically examining her unpublished, contemporary dramatic work, “The Kitchen Prayer Series.” This study contends that Dickerson was an architect of Black feminist theatre precisely as she intervened in dominant discourses surrounding feminist theatre and performance, diverging from the prevailing masculinist approaches to creating and staging works about women of color.
