Abstract

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have fostered cross-continental bonds with Africa since the nineteenth century. From Horace Mann Bond to Nannie Helen Burroughs, Black intellectuals and educators have long engaged in intellectual, cultural, and educational exchanges with the continent, fostering a reciprocal flow of ideas and people that deepened transcontinental ties. “Africa and America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities” explores the historical and evolving relationships between HBCUs and African nations. By blending historical insight with current data, this book documents the history and significance of these transcontinental ties and provides a framework for future collaboration that supports HBCU sustainability and Africa’s growing demand for tertiary education.
