Abstract

This project constructs a biography of English novelist, playwright, poet, translator, publisher, and periodical editor Eliza Haywood (1693?-1756), with special attention to her professional and political contexts. Many of the materials required can be found in the British Library, which houses 168 primary Haywood texts as well as the Burney collection of eighteenth-century London newspapers. Additional records offices and genealogical centers in London and environs also yield details of her life. These inquiries are directed towards a full critical biography of Haywood, the first undertaken since 1915.
