Abstract
This dissertation project explores the legacies of disappearance in the long shadow of war, focusing on the experiences and meanings that emerge from the humanitarian search for the disappeared. “Searching for the Missing” is a collaborative research project with Indigenous communities of the Nasa nation and ex-combatants of the FARC guerrilla group in southwestern Colombia, examining frictions between memories, practices, and territories in reckoning with the disappeared. Using collaborative methods at the intersection of storytelling, participatory mapping, and multimodal formats, the study explores the boundaries and intersections of past-present, memory-forgetting, and victim-perpetrator, challenging transitional justice discourses as a unilineal process of healing and reconciliation.
