'Acompañamiento': Transnational Feminist Interventions on Abortion Access in Mexico

Department

Sociology

Abstract

This project examines transnational feminist networks providing logistical, technical, and emotional support—acompañamiento—for self-managed abortions in Mexico. Rooted in long-standing collective action around reproductive health, these networks harness medical and digital technology to improve access at the brims of medical and legal control. Bridging together gender studies, political sociology, and feminist geography, this project analyzes the political economy in which these networks emerge and the tensions between activism, state recognition, and direct-action strategies. Through feminist and digital ethnographic methods, this research maps the evolving geographies of this activism and how they challenge traditional, state-bound actions, illustrating how grassroots feminism is DIYing healthcare and reshaping the transnational reproductive justice landscape.
