Abstract

In early October 2025 on the campus of Morehouse College a collective of humanities scholars will host a three-day symposium on “Martin Luther King Jr. and the Black Liberal Arts Tradition.” This interdisciplinary convening has three objectives: to introduce and critically assess the idea of a Black liberal arts tradition; to invoke the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., one of the nation’s most prominent Black liberal arts college graduates, as an entrée into this work; and to stimulate a broader conversation about the future of liberal arts education at HBCUs. Selected symposium participants will be invited to contribute to an edited volume to be published by the University of Georgia Press.
