Towards a New Cartography of Yaqui Mobility

Abstract

Scholar and public perceptions have positioned Yaqui Indigenous peoples in eight pueblos in southern Sonora, Mexico, as well as in two of Arizona’s major cities, due to their journeys across the Sonoran Desert since the late nineteenth century. They are labeled as immigrants, political refugees, and Mexican Indians who do not belong in the American Southwest. “Towards a New Cartography of Yaqui Mobility” maps and redefines Yaqui history by following the lives of Yaqui individuals, families, and communities across the Sonoran Desert region. It centers on the interconnectedness of shared space and people, transcending notions of geopolitical boundaries and time.
