Abstract
The book project, “Women, Fashion, and Money in Early 20th Century Fiction,” historicizes working and lower-middle class women’s narratives in the modernist period. The study contributes to the expanding field of modernism by exploring how various early twentieth century authors reconcile modernist forms of narration with representations of “low,” mundane objects such as clothing, accessories, and physical money. This study fills a gap in modernist criticism by examining how fiction can constitute a form of critique of class and capital through the frank representation of often abject economic realities, while also telling the story of women’s contributions to the circulation of capital in the early twentieth century.
