Project

Recovering the Anticolonial Roots of Sinographic Radicalism in Indonesia

Department

East Asian Languages and Cultures

Abstract

This project centers on research in China and Southeast Asia to study rare Chinese-language sources published in late-colonial Indonesia. This research contributes to the current book project, "Red Nanyang: Sinographic Literature in Modern Indonesia." The book seeks to provide both the authoritative account of modern Chinese-language literature from Indonesia, as well as a compelling investigation into the links between print culture and political radicalism in the Chinese diaspora. It builds on the dissertation by expanding it to the early twentieth century and incorporating previously unused sources.
