The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) welcomes the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD) to its century-old federation of academic societies. The ACLS Board of Directors unanimously approved the addition of this esteemed scholarly organization on Friday, October 24, 2025.

Founded in 2000, ASWAD represents international scholars seeking to further understanding of Africa and the African Diaspora. With more than 900 individual and institutional members, ASWAD is multilingual and interdisciplinary organization dedicated to sharing research across disciplines, as well as with students and the wider public.  

“ACLS proudly welcomes the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora into our distinguished community of scholarly societies,” said ACLS President Joy Connolly. “ASWAD’s work deepens understanding of the African Diaspora and strengthens the exchange of ideas across borders and disciplines. We look forward to partnering with ASWAD and its members to amplify their vital contributions in the humanities and social sciences.”
