Abstract

There is a long history linking segregation to excess mortality during the early twentieth century. The mechanisms behind this relationship are often unclear. This dissertation brings conventionally separate, empirical fields together on a human-centered theme, reorienting scholarly attention to mortality and the lungs and health differences related to breathing. In doing so, the study provides a historical framework for understanding the epidemiological consequences of Jim Crow.
