Yidong Gong

This book project offers an analysis of medicine from China in South Sudan, a hybrid system which today integrates aid and business, and began decades ago as the provenance of “barefoot doctors” and the international camaraderie that bound China and Africa together. In doing so, it reveals new forms of biopolitics and medical care that lie beyond the “emergency imaginary” and “minimal biopolitics” reflected in current global health programs, and provides new insight into contemporary medical humanitarian programs in conflict-ridden/post-conflict African countries. Along the way, the book documents the production, transformation, and exchange of “expert knowledge” on various levels.
