The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the American Historical Association (AHA), and the Modern Language Association (MLA) celebrate Judge Colleen McMahon’s July 25, 2025, decision for the Authors Guild, putting a stay on the cancellations of grants awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
While it is disappointing that our request for an injunction and some of the claims in our own suit have been dismissed, we are encouraged that the judge also rejected the government’s motion to dismiss our claim that DOGE was responsible for the terminations, as well as our First Amendment claims. We will continue to move forward with the case and remain steadfast in our efforts to stop the unlawful dismantling of NEH.
