Project

English Translation of Ten Female-Authored Buddhist Works

Department

Abstract

The project produces English translations of ten Tantric Buddhist texts authored by medieval female masters from the Swat Valley, Pakistan, between the ninth and the eleventh centuries. The texts give rare insight into Buddhist teachings promulgated by women and raise important questions of gender, sexuality, and the status of women in Tantric communities. The text corpus includes narrative passages that provide biographical details for some of the female authors, as well as meditation and yoga manuals, ritual texts, philosophical-spiritual writings, and poetry.
