The Great Intellectual Enterprise: The Manchu-language Historiography in the Seventeenth Century Globe

Department

History

Abstract

This project uncovers how the rising Manchu empire, over the course of the mid-seventeenth century, retold world history in the indigenous language of Manchu. This research is based on a vast array of previously unknown manuscripts collected and digitized since 2019. The project reveals that the Manchu historiographical projects of the mid-seventeenth century, which remain little known to the scholarly community, played a critical role in shaping the intellectual mainstream in China and contributed to global theorization of the state in the eighteenth century. The project encompasses a monograph, two published methodological articles, and a package of materials for Manchu-language pedagogy.
