Abstract

“The Book at the Limits of Christian Materiality” develops a critical approach to the study of ancient Christian manuscript artifacts. The project considers what gets lost in terms of diversity and difference in the stories scholars tell about material evidence from ancient Egypt. It examines how and where ideas of Christian supremacy, orthodoxy and heresy, canonical boundaries, and race and eugenics appear within discussions about ancient Christian book artifacts. In doing so, the monograph offers a new paradigm to think about justice in the study and practice of history, questioning what responsibilities to care for ancient artifacts exist in the present.
