Abstract

This project investigates the rising global popularity of fascism through a case study analysis of a recently established national memorial in northeast Italy. The memorial commemorates Nazi and Fascist officials and collaborators who were summarily executed by Yugoslavian communist partisans at the end of World War II. This srudy synthesizes archival research, interviews, historical scholarship, and site visits to analyze the interaction of the memorial’s material and visual rhetorical strategies with the changing political, economic, and cultural landscape. Through this analysis, “Monument in Motu” offers a way to examine some of the rhetorical processes by which extreme political viewpoints can become acceptable and popular.
