Searching for Blackness in Buenos Aires: The Resurgence of Black Identity in Argentina

Department

Ethnic and Race Studies

Abstract

Argentina is usually excluded from conversations on the African Diaspora. Most of the research on its Black population is historical, reifying the myth of their disappearance. Similarly, Argentina is left out of debates on Black identity formation and activism in Afro-Latin American Studies. The proposed research is part of a larger book project that analyzes the evolution of Black identity in Argentina and how Africans and Afro-descendants are challenging established notions of race and identity. The book interrogates the national identity of Argentina as exclusively white and European and centers the contributions of Black activists in Buenos Aires, the epicenter of Black activism in the country. Furthermore, this work challenges the complete erasure of Afro-Argentines in the Diaspora.
