Abstract

"The Houses of Novi Sad, or the Book of Shame" is a trade book that explores how the legacies of genocide and mass violence are reflected in, and embodied by, the physical urban landscape, and how historical memory is shaped by changes in that landscape. Framing the narrative around my trips from the United States to visit my ailing father who had survived the infamous Novi Sad massacre in 1942, this project interrogates the urban history of my hometown based on archival sources, interviews, and cultural representations of its violent past.
