Abstract
The Russian Empire owes its birth to the life’s work of Ukrainian-born Archbishop Feofan Prokopovych (1677-1736). A polymathic mind, Prokopovych shaped the rise of modern Russia under Peter I, through his unique visions of plenist physics, Protestant theology and Enlightenment politics. This project development itinerary explores the earlier milestones of the archbishop’s life, particularly his intellectual formation in Ukraine, Italy and Germany. Such mileposts reveal a much deeper impact of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolutions in Ukraine and then Russia than previously recognized in historiography.
