Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between Jewish and European literature. In particular, I examine the long history of subversive Jewish rewrites of European canonical texts. The rewrites, from Don Quixote to Tannhäuser, were often a means for the Jews of Europe to challenge their uncertain position and to question the very foundations of European nationalism.
