2018 MAG Convention in Ukraine–Call for Applications

1/18/2018

"Image of the Self," the second annual convention of The International Association for the Humanities–MAG, will take place in Lviv, Ukraine, June 27-29, 2018.

Following the successful convention in Lviv in 2016, jointly sponsored by MAG and the Association of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), the 2018 event is establishing a learned-society-like practice of annual meetings in the region.  Although a young association, MAG has committed to organizing annual conventions, in cooperation with ASEEES (in years in which ASEEES holds summer conventions in the region) or on the basis of MAG resources alone (in intervening years).

The 2018 event will take place in partnership with Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, affording an open forum for scholars from Europe, Eurasia, North America, and other countries. Travel grants will be available to eligible applicants from the region.

This year’s theme is “Image of the Self,” carrying forward discussions initiated by the 2016 theme: “Image of the Other.”  Panels and roundtables will examine the way states, societies, interest groups and social movements, as well as individuals, represent themselves to themselves and to others through manifold means including language, culture, literature, the politics of history, and politics as such.  Images of the self can be found, of course, not only in scholarship but also in popular writing, artistic expression, and in the public sphere.

How have some images given rise to stereotypes and instrumentalized narratives?  How have some others constituted resources for tolerance, mutual respect, and cooperation?  These issues appear in headlines worldwide, but they seem especially salient in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

MAG, a learned society that grew out of the ACLS Humanities Program in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine, invites scholars of all countries to submit proposals addressing the “Image of the Self” as related to histories and contemporaneities of Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

Deadline for all applications:  March 5, 2018.
