ACLS Mourns the Loss of Joyce Appleby

JoyceAppleby"On behalf of the ACLS community, I offer condolences to the family of Joyce Appleby, who died last month at the age of 87," said ACLS president Pauline Yu. "A distinguished historian of the United States, Joyce generously shared the story of her life of learning as our Haskins Prize Lecturer in 2012. She concluded her lecture with the observation that 'Remembering and forgetting determine the history we tell. It could also be said that history orders the chaos of the past through stories that then create meaning.'

"Throughout her career as a scholar and as a teacher, Joyce created meaning and understanding of American economic, intellectual, and political history," continued President Yu. "We will miss her greatly."
