The information below, from the 2009-10 competition, is for information purposes only, and will be updated in the fall.

Grant Details

  • Deadline: January 15, 2010
  • Amount: $20,000

A grant of $20,000 will be made to an individual or collaborative team for a research project on heritage speakers of an East European language in the United States. Heritage speakers constitute an untapped national resource for academic and policy research, but there has been little study of their special needs for bringing their linguistic skills up to a professional level. The project receiving the grant must report preliminary results by January 15, 2011 and must be completed before December 31, 2011. The project should culminate in 1) an analytical paper and 2) a proposal for an advanced-mastery course for community of heritage speakers that was studied.
